Customer Reviews of 100% Organic West African Shea Butter 16 ozCustomer Review: Poor quality Summary: 2 Stars
When I first bought this product, I thought it was fine, but unremarkable. At the time, my only concerns were: 1) Did it smell smokey like real shea butter? and 2) Did it look old or smell rancid? The former question was sort-of yes (inordinately smokey), and at least my batch was not rancid.
I have since become more educated on how this product is supposed to look, smell, and "work," and as such am much less satisfied. The product is sold as 100% shea butter and I will not say that it isn't, but it certainly is not the best quality that I have found (or the best price), so I certainly have my doubts. I use shea butter for hair care (4a/4b African American natural hair) and as a skin moisturizer. In my experience, this product does not absorb well and instead sort of just sits on top of my hair or skin. Shea butter from other sources that I have used since do NOT have the same effect. This product is bright yellow (not cream, YELLOW-much yellower than all other shea butters I have seen), somewhat hard and therefore difficult to work with at times because it does not melt easily in the hands. Overall, I don't think this a very good product and would caution against using it. There are plenty of other online retailers who will provide a superior quality product at a reasonable price.
Customer Review: great value for raw shea butter Summary: 5 Stars
I just received my shea butter today. It was double-wrapped in plastic and very yellow. The smell was reminiscent of previous raw shea butters I have used, although its color was different. The texture was very hard but it melted at body temperature. I did as other reviewers recommended and immediately emptied it into a stand mixer and whipped it. I also added some jojoba oil, borage oil, and a little bit of tea tree oil. It turned out super SUPER rich and thick. I had to use a lot of detergent to wash out the mixing bowl haha, but it finally did come off. As other reviewers have mentioned, a little does go a loong way. I stored it in an empty cetaphil container, spread the extras on my hands, and plan to try it out on my body over the next few days. So far my hands feel very good--after washing the mixing bowl I noticed that little droplets of water were beaded up on my skin, over the film of shea butter! (my hands were super-protected from the elements lol)
Only 4 stars because I don't know how it will work for my skin, but I have a feeling I will be coming back to make this a 5-star review in a few weeks. Overall this seems to be a good value and a great buy!
update 3/20/2011: shea butter is still working great. very thick; this purchase will last a while!
Customer Review: BEST STUFF FOR JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING Summary: 5 Stars
Pure African Shea butter is one of the oldest forms of moisturizing around. It has been used in Africa for centuries. PURE RAW shea butter (not shea mixed with olive, mineral, or other oils...sometimes called Body Butters) is good for daily moisturizing of the body, face and hair. It is good for scarring, soothing stretch marks and a host of other things. Beware...a lot of retails (online and "regular" stores) sell low grades of shea butter OR shea mixed with other oils for unreal prices. This product is what I buy form various African vendors at conventions and small ethnic locations. It last long and it is real...no fancy packaging, etc. Just the product in a plain plastic jar. In addition to this I would recommend African Black Soap the best one is by DUDU Oson (I know I spelled it wrong) but you will know when you find it...it is a bit higher in price here at Amazon...but it is not a bad price. You can use that for your body AND face and you will notice the difference over time best of all NO CHEMICAL ADDITIVES!!! Since I have gradually made the switch to NATURAL body products my skin, nail and hair has been great. NOTE: To get thereal value of this product I recommend order MORE than 1 @ a time to off set the shipping. Just FYI. Hope thai helps.
Customer Review: Made Me Sick Summary: 1 Stars
I should have listened to one of the reviewers when she mentioned that she thought she got a not so good batch because it was mustard yellow and it didn't feel right to her. I too got the yellowy mustard color. I thought it was okay, started to use it for a few weeks or so...but then I got horribly sick and nauseous. I did some muscle testing to see what products I was having such a horrible reaction to and it was the African Shea Butter I ordered from this particular vendor. I stopped using it and my nausea dissipated. I threw the batch out. I won't be asking for a refund as the shipping was not worth the return.
I am extremely sensitive to food and products that contain not so good stuff in it and I guess this didn't--or somehow it was a rancid batch. I did appreciate the quick shipment but the product was a bust. I don't understand why someone would sell a horrible batch. I ordered several things from this vendor--the dudu-osun african black soap, the shea butter oil 16 oz, and the shea butter. The dudu-osun soap is fine, but I have doubts about the shea butter oil as it made me dried out and the shea butter I bought from them is totally out for me. I WILL NOT be buying from this vendor again after the horrible reaction I had.
Customer Review: Best Moisturizer for African American Hair!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I just recently started using Shea butter after doing a lot of research. And I LOVE IT!!! The smell on the first day was a bit offensive to me b/c after 2 kids, my sense of smell is very sensitive. But I wanted to stick with it b/c of all the benefits I read about and after day 2, I don't even notice the smell anymore. And my sense of smell is VERY sensitive. On top of that, the Shea butter keeps my hair very moist and soft and I have natural African American hair. My hair is the texture that I believe most African American women have. And I obsesessed with products that make my hair soft b/c it's usually brittle and dry without the right product. I put Shea butter in my hair after I used Aubrey Organics Shampoo and deep conditioned with Aubrey Organics condition and jojoba oil. After washing the AO conditioner and jojoba out, I applied Shea butter to wet hair then I blow-dried it. I love the results so much!!! You have to buy it now. Oh yea, one more thing. When you buy the raw Shea butter, mix it with jojoba oil with a mixer. Then put it back in its container that it came in and it should be good to go. I also use Shea butter as my body moisturizer b/c it's that good. Like others have said, a little goes a
