What can I say? These are hefty clippers. Those that complain about not being able to reach around the side of their nails perhaps have odd fingernails? Not sure, as I have no problem using these to cut my fingernails. They are heavy-duty, and easy to use if you hold them right. I would say if you're thinking about these as a gift, make sure the man is a Tim "The Toolman" Taylor type and not a Ron "Sweatin' to the Oldies" Type. For that latter, perhaps something from Revlon would be best. These are tools. For a man that likes tools. Yes, they cut and leave a strong edge.
