Customer Reviews of Andis RC-2 Ionic 1875W Ceramic Hair Dryer with Folding Handle and Retractable CordCustomer Review: Great concept but exceedingly short shelf life Summary: 1 Stars
I eagerly snapped up this ionic hair dryer about over a year ago because of it's retractable cord and folding capabilities. Even the price was attractive. It really did take up little room in my bathroom drawer and the retractable cord was a plus. I thought I had the perfect blow dryer because it did what it was supposed to do and quickly. Now for the bad news: the retractable cord became chewed up and frayed after daily use and it became apparent that the cord was ultimately going to fray completely in due time. Then, the folding handle, low and behold, broke in half one morning. (Of course, the warranty had long expired). This dryer is too fragile to consider using on a daily basis and I consider myself a careful person when it comes to handling small appliances such as hair dryers. When I've replaced hair dryers in the past, it was been because they've simply reached the end of their lifespans and burned out. I'd caution anyone to consider this before buying because these 2 features alone, while very appealing, can shorten an otherwise good hairdryer's lifespan. I've now purchased a T3 Tourmaline (a featherweight, quiet hairdryer with no retractable cord or folding handle) which seems to work just fine and appears to have a much longer lifespan.
Customer Review: Best hair dryer for the money Summary: 5 Stars
I recently got to try this hair dryer in a Marriott hotel and was pleasantly surprised. At home I had the Sharper image 1875W quiet Ionic hair dryer and this is what I am comparing it to. I went thru two of the Sharper images ones (first one broke) which are much more expensive and my biggest complaint always was that it scorched my head.
Problems gone since I bought this. It is an awesome hair dryer. It lays in your hands comfortably, is sturdy and stores away in a breeze as it folds in the middle, plus you can retract the cord. On top of that it does not scorch or burn your head and also has the cool air feature (same as the Sharper Image) and my hair comes out nice, soft and never frizzy. At a price between $18 and $22 this is the hair dryer to buy. I did, and only wish I had known about this hair dryer earlier. I highly recommend it.
Update on 9/26/2009: Almost 3 years later we're still on the same hair dryer. The cord needs a little help to retract but nothing has given up on it yet. It has been dropped a few times too. For the price that is excellent and we have purchased a second unit for our other bathroom. Much better than the Sharper image version which is way more expensive, scorches your head and won't last long.
Customer Review: Iffy, At Best Summary: 2 Stars
In May 2008, I stayed at a nice hotel in Philly that had this hair dryer. I used it, loved it, came home & ordered it from Amazon. The "push to retract" did not work 100%, but I did not expect it to (dumb idea). Loved the dryer, did a great job on my hair. A few weeks ago I was using it when suddenly the barrel got bright orange like it was on fire. I turned the dryer off & unplugged it. Luckily I always have a "back up" hair dryer, so I dusted that off & used it. Plugged the Andis back in the next day, the switch was on "off", yet the dryer was running at full speed. Changing the switch setting did not make a difference, it continued to run at full speed. I had to unplug it to get it to stop running. Waited a few days, plugged it in, and it was fine.
Last week the barrel got bright orange like a flame thrower again and I had the same problem with it running on "high" even though the switch said "off."
Needless to say, the hair dryer is now in the trash, and I'm on the hunt yet AGAIN for a hair dryer that gets hot enough to straighten my naturally curly hair, but doesn't overheat itself or blow itself up. It's not rocket science.
Customer Review: disappointing -- the feature I bought it for quit working Summary: 2 Stars
I had a perfectly good hair dryer but got tired of coiling/wrapping the cord around the handle or something every time I put it away. I bought the Andis because it has not only the retracting cord but also the folding handle, and space is at a premium in my place.
The dryer itself does a good job. Not only is 1875 watts plenty hot but I use it on 'high' and the motor blows the air hard enough that I can dry my hair in only about 5-7 minutes which is good.
The disappointment is the cord retraction. It worked fine maybe the first half dozen times I used the dryer, and then suddenly it stopped short. It still retracts but stops with about 6" of what it used to retract, still out. Add that to the length that was never intended to be retracted, and voila, I'm dealing with cord again - the one reason I bought the thing to avoid!
Since the heater, motor, and handle still work, I'm keeping it till I can find something better. I had never heard of Andis before this and I wonder if it's just an off brand...? At any rate, do NOT buy this if the cord retraction is what's gotten your attention.
Customer Review: Love this blowdryer despite problematic cord Summary: 4 Stars
This blowdryer is everything I was looking for; affordable, compactable (but beware, it's not a dinky little thing), durable and of course, good at drying hair.
The one problem I had with it was the retractable cord (the only reason it doesn't get all 5 stars from me). The first model I received stopped retracting the cord within a day. I returned it and Amazon sent me a new one. I've had it for several months now and the cord still retracts (most of the way, but not quite all the way). The blowdryer still works great though.
I like the different settings, and the high setting it very effective.
I don't use the cool setting very often but if I did I would want there to be different levels (high it the only option).
My previous folding dryer was a little smaller, which was nice, but it didn't have nearly as much power; I'll take the power over the space, thank you. I suppose it all depends on what you're looking for in a dryer, but I would say overall, this is a great buy. You'd be hard-pressed to beat the price.
