Before I even begin this, I ask the reader to do something so as to avoid comment that tells me, in so many words, "you don't know what you're talking about!" That said, here is the mini-version: For every professional tattoo artist you can find on the internet who says, "NEVER use Bag Balm on a new tattoo", you will find just as many professional tattoo artists who wholly disagree and swear by Bag Balm for use on a new tattoo! You can verify this by simply checking the internet yourself! Bottom line, it's a toss-up and the proverbial 'who do you believe' kind of thing but, having said that too, each person with a tattoo or tattoos plural will have different views on it and based on their 'own' individual experience with it. Mine are very positive on the -5- tattoos I now have. I find Bag Balm to be a very long lasting moisturizer and I also say this especially for those who have dry and flaky skin during all 4 seasons of the year, much less just the winter season -- rub in some Bag Balm on existing tattoos [** well over a year since you originally had it done] and you'll notice that Bag Balm will actually 'enhance' the 'colors' of the tattoo since it instantly deals with the dry and flaky skin which often tends to give the tattoo an old 'dried out' appearance and hides the brilliance of the underlying tattoo colors.
The key to proper usage is a 'thin' film coating of Bag Balm on the tattoo which is all that is needed. All too often some folks literally smother a tattoo with all kinds of creams and salves and 'that' could have negative results. I've used Bag Balm for new tattoo after-care 'and' down the line "tats" as well to enhance the tattoo essentially due to dry and flakey skin and I've not been disappointed in the visibly positive results. The ultimate bottom line is what works for ==YOU== and ==your== tattoo(s) versus what someone else says 'may' or 'may not' work or, indeed, what worked or did not work for them! Just like tattoo healing time, each person is different but my own experience with Bag Balm has been very positive and including the literal rejuvenation of much older tattoos due to the extended moisturizing effect of Bag Balm and its general enhancement of existing tattoo colors, black inclusive.
Let me add this addendum in passing and in reviewing my own comments: IF you're worried about just how much Bag Balm constitutes a "thin film" or my comment about not over-doing it, and you just got the tattoo where there are 'many' colors and small detail work of mixed-bag colors, one option during the 'new' or 'initial' tattoo healing period is using the non greasy and "fragrance free" skin moisturizer, Curél , which I've also used with excellent results in terms of an extended period skin moisturizer. BTW, do READ about tattoo healing times! Some folks become very nervous 'after' getting the tattoo because the tattoo suddenly "looks much different!" than when they first saw it after the tattoo artist finished but they didn't know that the 'normal' healing process which can often take 'weeks' to do will cause very 'normal' seeping of the colors, scabbing, flaking or what looks like raised 'bumps' on the skin that are color impregnated. A well healed tattoo should be very soft and smooth to the touch with 'no' raised areas on the surface of the tattoo and this takes time with each person having a different healing period. For another example, when the tattoo artist does the usually multi-colored 'eyes' of a particular tattoo [animal or whatever], the tendency during the healing process is to have the multi-eye colors sort-of lump together but this [and other areas of the well detailed tattoo] will pass with normal body healing. Remember that the 'second' phase of getting that tattoo is this: the equally important post-tattoo healing phase which is up to ==you== with regard to tattoo after-care and which can easily approach some weeks in duration or, in some cases, well over over a month [depending on the extent of the tattoo] to heal completely. DO NOT 'help it along' by picking at it with your fingers or a Q-tip or vigorous rubbing ... let your 'body' do the healing but you can assist in that endeavor and normal process by keeping the tattoo well cleaned and well hydrated! Remember too that from the perspective of the 'body', "it" views a tattoo as a 'wound' ! Hey, among my various long-term hobbies is playing both the piano and the guitar but do I exaggerate when I say that when a guitar newbie picks up a 'guitar', the fret-board finger tips begin to rebel big time and rather loudly so 'until' those requisite 'callouses' are formed [by the body] and then, and 'only' then, does the well known discomfort of the fret-board hand finger tips subside! With a tattoo, the proper 'healing' of same is the first big hurdle!
