Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
STICK SCENTS, a "fragrance diffuser" for "aroma room therapy", isn't something I'd normally buy for myself - too frou-frou. But, it was given to me gratis, so what the hell.
Arriving in three 13" x 2.5" cardboard canisters was one each of three aromas: Holiday Spice (ginger, cinnamon, maple, clove, vanilla), Winter Forest (pine, cedar, fir, hemlock, musk, vanilla), and Candy Cane (peppermint, eucalyptus, vanilla). The ubiquitous vanilla is innocuous enough, but isn't hemlock what Socrates drank to commit suicide? Hmm, I'd better check the Web.
Actually, the "hemlock" the Athens city-state forced the philosopher to swig was made with an herb of the genus Conium, and the "hemlock" in STICK SCENTS is presumably the conifer of the genus Tsuga, both of which are thought to have a similar smell. Best the manufacturer not get them confused. (Product made in the good ol' US of A, not China.)
Inside the canister is a bundle of eight foot-long wooden sticks, each maybe with half the heft of a chopstick, a tightly capped, cylindrical, narrow-necked glass bottle, 5.25" high and 2.25" in diameter, containing 8 ounces of scented alcohol-oil, and a separate wooden cap. The bottle and wooden cap are remarkably plain and perhaps suitable for a trailer habitat but surely not an elegant Martha Stewart Home such as the one you have, dear reader.
The directions for use on the side of the canister, with illustrations, are fool-proof enough, though I've encountered many fools in my time so there's still the potential for an entertaining disaster:
"1. Remove tape from sticks."
The only peril here is nicking yourself with the scissors (not included).
"2. Remove closed cap from bottle and replace with open cap."
The "open cap" is the separate wooden cap; don't be confused.
"3. Place all enclosed sticks in open cap securely on the bottle. The sticks allow the fragrance to evaporate into the air. Flip the sticks two or three times initially to saturate and then as needed to obtain desired fragrance intensity."
My initial thought was that the protruding sticks allow the alcohol-oil to wick up out of the bottle for exposure to ambient air and subsequent evaporation. However, I don't think they're porous enough for that mode of action. Rather, I suspect the oil simply coating the upper length of the sticks is what evaporates; that's why you have to flip them occasionally. Also, the label doesn't say which alcohol is involved with the blend (methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, butyl, etc.). Perhaps it would be prudent not to drink the concoction until you find out.
"4. Always handle STICK SCENTS by the bottle. Each wood cap is hand-bored to fit snugly on the bottle but may shrink or swell depending on dry or humid air conditions."
"Snugly" is perhaps an overstatement, or maybe our computer room at home isn't humid enough. And I'm not sure why "hand-bored" would be any better than machine -bored, as is implied. In any case, it would be wise to position the diffuser out of reach of toddlers and pets. We have a trio of cats, so that precaution is especially challenging to follow. One of them, aptly named Trouble, likes to chew on the ends of wood clothespins, and I can see the exposed tips of the sticks being particularly enticing. Any of the three rubbing up against the STICK SCENTS, as felines are wont to do in general, would easily knock the contrivance over, spilling the liquid reservoir. Well, at least the resultant clean-up wouldn't be as noxious as hair-balls in half-digested cat food.
So, you may ask, how does the product work? The scent we chose to open first was Winter Forest, it being the winter holiday season and all and we chose not to put up a Yule tree. The very enticing fragrance is pleasantly noticeable in a 15' x 20' room but not extravagantly so. Perhaps in the warmer months, or if my energy conscious wife would let me turn on the central heating - the frost on the inside of the windows needs constant scraping, the evaporation would be faster and the smell more pronounced. As it is, I find myself flipping the sticks maybe once a day, something I wouldn't have to do with a real tree. Get back to me on this flipping thing next July.
I surmise a smoldering incense stick would provide a more pervasive effect, but then I'd have to keep lighting them, and allowing me to fiddle with matches is a dodgy proposition even when I'm on my medication. But, for the money I paid, I can't complain. I may even include the Holiday Spice set in my Mom's Christmas basket. Never say that I'm not generous to a fault.
P.S. July 4, 2008. There's still about 40% of the original liquid remaining, and it continues to smell great. There would perhaps be less left if I flipped the stix more often; I tend to be forgetful in my old age.
