I bought this item hoping to have a new look for school this year. My hair is probably the worst type of hair anyone could have for this product: very long, VERY dark, and very thick. I haven't tried all the colors, but I've tried a few, and I had to go over one clump of hair over and over to get the color noticeable. The tool also missed a few spots. The red and blue work best on my hair, thankfully. I tried the gold and yellowish blonde. Those didn't work AT ALL. I have a hunch that none of the other blondes will work either. My hair did get caught a bit because I didn't hold it tight, but it didn't really hurt, because the tool stops when your hair gets caught. I bought this product intending to only do two streaks on either side of my head. When I did to deside to try putting some color farther back on my head, it was rather hard to do on yourself,even for a twelve year old. A mirror is necesarry if you don't want to make a mess of yourself, and want to do it alone. I took another review's advice and tried scratching some color off of the catridge before you apply it. I highly recccomend this technique. Overall, this product didn't earn up to what I'd hoped it would be, and the picture of the woman on the cover is way over exaggerating for this product. The first highlights I ever had done was a permanent set that my beauty-school dropout stepsister performed on me. They were orange, when they were supposed to be red.
With this little tool, there are no such surprises. What you see is what you get. The little brushes whir around and brush the solid color cartridge and paint your hair with the color. Simple as that. The use of the little gadget was very intuitive, as I was able to use it without pouring over the instructions. The fact that this color washes out is VERY reassuring and is perfect for those of us who like to spice things up a bit without converting to an entirely different style.
One thing I was particularly impressed with, however small it may seem, was that the pictures that you see on the box are fairly accurate to what you get. One may notice that the models' hair looks oddly separated from the rest of the head of hair in the pictures. This is how it happens when you use the color-er. For what this is, it really is to be expected, and unless you're going to an awards banquet, really isn't that big of a deal.
I bought this item at a four-for-ten sale at Icing By Claire's, and I'm glad I picked this out for one of that four. A good buy, for sure. I will definitely buy the refills.

I ordered this product for my daughter who has been asking for it since we first saw it on TV. I was reluctant to try it because I was afraid it would be more permanent. I gave in, and I was pleasantly surprised. It is easy enough to use, and doesn't take very long to apply. You do have to make sure you hold the hair taught while applying it or you could end up with a few hairs caught in the brushes. I took another reviewer's advise and rubbed the color cartridge with my finger first to get the film off before applying it to the hair. This worked beautifully. The color stayed in until I washed my daughter's hair, although it definately was not as vibrant on day 2 as it was when it was freshly applied. The color did wash right out in 1 shampoo. The only disappointing thing about it is that of the 18 color cartridges it comes with only about 4 of them are "fun" colors (red & blue) that little kids are interested in. The rest of the colors are natural colors (blondes/golds) mostly for highlights. It would be nice if they added some purples, pinks & greens to the set as well.Customer Review: Big bait and switch

Okay -- maybe I'm missing something here. This product doesn't work AT ALL. I got it for my 8-year old daughter who meets the perfect profile listed by reviewers here -- straight, fine, shoulder length, light brown hair. We tried everything -- scraping the top layer, wetting the product, trying it on dry hair, wet hair, dirty hair, clean hair -- we could not even get an inkling of color out of it. I have read terrible reviews of it on other sites too since I purchased it but bought it based on the good reviews here. I just don't get it -- I'm a pretty mechanical person and the instructions aren't really that complicated so I don't think I'm doing anything wrong but it just doesn't work. Big disappointment for my daughter as a birthday present. I also got her the Conair hair wrapping kit and that made up for this dud of a product because that hair wrapper works great. But the color accents kit has sat in the box ever since and will probably end up at a garage sale for 5 cents and a "buy at your own risk" note. Glad other people are satisfied but I give it a big thumbs down.Customer Review: Patience!

I bought this at Toys 'R' Us, finding after high anticipation. I, as well as others, sat in awe at the TV commercial for this product. I like change, so permanent is never an option for me. With this Conair Pro-Color Accents Kit, you can change your 'style' whenever you feel like! The first time I used this, I used the 'Ripe Plum' which is a vibrant red. Boy, did it show up! I was still trying to figure out how to use it, however, it was fairly simple to do. You pull a strand of hair through and push the lever. BAM! I have blonde, straight hair, so I do not know for sure if it works as well on darker hair. One shampoo later, I was left with my normal hair color! This product is ALL that it is cracked up to be. I reccomend it to all! It is way cheaper than going to a salon and getting hi or low-lites.
After the first use, and some patience, you will get it down, and will enjoy this many times!
