I bought this because for two reasons: I trust Coppertone as a brand, and I LOVE the smell of this stuff. Water Babies, Dreft & original Johnson's & Johnson's baby shampoo are all scent-heaven to me.
Unfortunately though, I had to discontinue using it. I put some on my 5 month old son, and he developed a sensitivity to it and broke out in an ugly rash. After a trip to the pediatrician and a prescription for 2% hydrocortisone ointment, we realized it was probably from the -benzone's in the sunscreen. Evidently this is a somewhat common reaction to those ingredients, at least according to a Google consensus.
Let me say that my son is NOT one of those sensitive-skinned, bubble-baby types. We use plain Dreft or Tide on his clothes, he gets scented lotions & powders and regular old Johnson's bath products. I was a bit shocked when he all of a sudden had a reaction to a health & beauty type product. The only other thing he has had a reaction to is Huggies diapers (Pampers are fine though). And believe me, I am ALL about baby-scented-products. Anything to cover up the poop smell is fine by me :)
We switched to Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby, which is a zinc oxide product with good results. However, that stuff is rather spendy for how much sunscreen we go through (ten for a 3 oz bottle vs. seven for a 8 oz bottle of Coppertone!), so I am now going to try to the "Free & Clear" version of my beloved Water Babies. If only it smelled like the original... (but it did live up to it's Tear Free promise!)
