Customer Reviews of Dove Sensitive Skin Unscented Beauty Bar, 14 CountCustomer Review: Why you should switch to Dove or another mild non-antibiotic soap! Summary: 5 Stars
Google: [...] and other articles regarding why mild, non-antibiotic soaps are better for all of us than antibiotic soaps.
The over use of antibiotics in EVERYTHING: the food that cows, pigs, hens, and so on are given in their food; the over use of antibiotics for colds and viruses due to patient's demands to their doctors; saving and sharing antibiotics once a person starts to feel better...all of these add up to bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics. What that leads to is outbreaks of truly dangerous bacteria which cannot be killed off by any of the routine antibiotics used today. MRSA is one example, a dangerous bacteria which requires very expensive antibiotics and still keeps on spreading.
Recent studies, the one mentioned above and others, done by legitimate doctors and medical researchers, show that mild soaps, WITHOUT antibiotics in them do just as well in cleansing the skin, and are safer from the point of view that we all need to ingest and be exposed to fewer antibiotics, not more.
I like Dove, but regular Dove, Oil of Olay, Ivory, and so on, fit the same criteria: mild soap without antibiotics in them. The key thing to be aware of when washing your hands (hand to hand touch is the main way that viruses and bacterias spread) is to say the alphabet (hopefully to yourself!) while scrubbing your hands well (with a lot of friction) in warm water and soap. That is a good way to teach your children "how" to wash their hands as well.
NOTE: another poster prior to me mentioned her annoyance at having Dove breakdown and become useless when exposed to water in the shower or bath. There are suction cup soap holders which stick to the wall of the shower/tub area and should be placed where the direct shower or water from the faucet cannot hit it and make it begin to disintegrate. All these milder soaps, mentioned above, have a tendency to do this, so its worth the small amount of money to purchase the soap holder, and keep the soap away from running water (until you need it, that is.)
As an aside: to the poster who mentioned using Dove for Sensitive Skin for her private parts, I'd disagree with that. I have no scientific proof, but I know from my own experience that any soap is irritating to the mucus membranes and to those delicate body parts. I would suggest, not as an expert, but from my own experience and what I've observed with patients , that any soap can be irritating and lead to bladder infections (urinary tract infections) which are very painful and often DO require antibiotics to prevent a kidney infection which is potentially dangerous. I think a mild soap made for those body parts MAY be better in the long run, especially for those prone to Urinary Tract Infections or Kidney Infections. (For example: Summer's Eve Wash, Sensitive 15 fl oz (444 ml)).
If you are in a public restroom, rather than covering the toilet seat with paper towels, I'd be more concerned with using a paper towel to open the door of the restroom when leaving and flushing the toilet with my shoe.
There are, of course, some situations in which the above statements are not true. If your doctor and/or dermatologist wants you to use a special type of soap that is different and of course you should follow his/her directions. Some people with severe acne may need stronger soaps: stronger in the sense of what they contain. The same holds true for people with other skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, and so on....hopefully if you have any of these conditions you are seeing a specialist: a dermatologist.
Meanwhile, Dove is a good soap to use, whether it is specified as "for sensitive skin" or not. (From an R.N.)
