Customer Reviews of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps Pure-Castile Soap, 18-in-1 Hemp Peppermint, 32 Ounce BottleCustomer Review: Gentle for skin use, a little too drying for hair Summary: 5 Stars
Castile-based soaps are olive-oil based soaps. The name originates, according to an on-line source, from soaps made in a similar style from the Castile, Spain region.
I replaced my bar soaps and liquid soaps (for my showers) with the Bonner's Castille soap. To me, it was a safer choice since it was produced with organic oils. My skin is easily irritated, but this soap is really gentle.
I was surprised that this soap -- made from a majority of oils -- is able to work up a good lather. The consistency of this soap was a light, medium-thin liquid which poured easily. I find that only a few drops are needed for a puff, since this soap is concentrated.
This particular soap has a peppermint smell to it, which I actually enjoy. Peppermint essential oil is also a stimulating oil. Some days, the peppermint oil eaves my skin tingling, which lasts for a half hour and more after washing. If you don't like this effect, you may be better off using the almond oil based soap.
I've also used this castile soap as a shampoo, to wash my 4a/b hair. But, I stopped since after a few uses -- it left my hair really dry and stripped.
I haven't used this oil for house cleaning yet. I may try in the future.
Customer Review: Bronner's Liquid Peppermint Soap Summary: 3 Stars
I read the great reviews and although I agree that the soap smells really nice, it was quite a thin liquid. I wanted to make some foaming hand wash with it, but I had to add some really thick body wash to make it not squirt out and all over the place. When I added water and shook it, the mixture for the foaming hand soap pump turned an opaque white.
Overall, the soap reminds me of diluted soapy Pine-Sol. The price is a bit high for what you get, but because I love the smell I think I will just buy some peppermint oil next time.
Positives: The soap was not irritating to my skin and left my hands soft and smooth. I have sensitive skin. It did not tingle or feel like menthol shaving cream or anything, but I used just a tiny bit to wash my hands. Overall I like it, but I feel that the price is double what I actually think it's worth to me.
I haven't tried this peppermint soap in the shower yet. I'll update later if it's really much better in the shower than as hand washing soap. Note that this soap does not appear to be super-concentrated. It is about as thin as the foaming hand soap refill liquid.
Customer Review: Good soap Summary: 4 Stars
This is a good, multi-purpose soap. I tried using it as:
-Body wash
-Shampoo
-Laundry Detergent
-Toothpaste / tooth cleaner
I use it as a body wash, and it cleans great, and leaves a pleasant tingly feeling. I tried it as shampoo and it worked okay...but it leaves my hair feeling tangled, I don't like it. I used it as laundry soap too, and it worked well. Just squirted some in the washer, maybe a 1/3 of a cup, along with a few dashes of baking soda and vinegar. I'd heard you can use it on your teeth too, which seemed strange, but I had to try it. After all, it's made of but plant oils, essential oils, and water. I ran my toothbrush under water, then put a drop of soap on it. It doesn't taste bad...there's a mild peppermint flavor. My mouth felt clean afterwards. However, there isn't anything abrasive in it (which makes "whitening" toothpastes whiten), and it doesn't contain fluoride, so I shan't be using it as my normal toothpaste. In a pinch, it would work though.
This stuff is pretty concentrated, but at the same time it's thin, so don't get confused: you don't need to use a lot.
Customer Review: tingly fresh, lots of suds, easy on sensitive skin, natural--a marvelous product I've used for years! Summary: 5 Stars
I can't tell you how wonderful this liquid soap is (and the bar soap is not shabby, either, but definitely get the liquid). Dr. Bronner's is one of the few soaps/gels with scent that doesn't irritate my super-sensitive skin. Most gels and soaps make me itch or get dermatitis. Not this one.
The minty smell is a joy. Makes you feel so clean. And it lathers like nobody's business. A little goes a way. Many gels claim the same, but it's a fib. This one really lathers like crazy. (I find that I can make it last longer by diluting the contents with water for showering purposes. Still great cleansing and smell.)
For hot days, nothing is more refreshing than a cool shower with minty Dr. Bronner's.
The packaging is basic (good, I want what's inside to work well and the price to be low). The label is actually quite weird. (Other reviewers have commented on the "trippy" or "hippy" text. They ain't exaggerating.) You'll get a kick out of trying to figure out the odd--but nice!--writing on the label.
I really recommend this product. Great smell, affordable, and effective.
Customer Review: Unpleasantly Surprised Summary: 2 Stars
I researched the hell out of Dr. Bronner's when I wanted a more natural shampoo/soap, and it received nothing but positive responses - so I bought it in Peppermint. The smell is lovely, but it DOES NOT wash my hair, though it is advertised as an 18-in-1 magic soap - shampoo included.
Let me preface by saying I have VERY thick hair.
The first time I noticed that it wasn't clean was while I was camping. After a shower, the back of my hair felt wet and heavy for WAY too long, so I checked it out in the bathroom, and it looked like my hair was greasy and filled with residue. At first I dismissed it based on the water pressure from camping.
When I returned home, I used Dr. Bronner's on my hair two days in a row, taking special care to make sure my hair was completely rinsed. By the second day, my hair was gnarly and matted in the back.
Unfortunately, even using this as a body wash makes my skin feel tight.
I REALLY wanted to like this shampoo. I was hoping it would change my life.
