I purchased this dryer primarily because it's a 1300 watt dryer. My old building cannot handle the typical 1800-watter. Upon opening the item, I wasn't impressed by the quality of the thing -- for an expensive hair dryer, it looked like a party favor at a kid's birthday party circa 1992: the packaging looked ridiculously cheap and the dryer itself had pieces of rough plastic jutting along the seams. I considered returning it then, but I'm lazy.
I was pleasantly surprised when I used the dryer for the first time. It tamed and flattened my frizzy, crazy thick hair. From the beginning, it leaked cold air near the bottom of the handle where the cord is attached, but it seemed to run fine otherwise. Yay, expensive hair dryer!
After a little over a month, it suddenly started making a very loud, metallic rattling noise -- clearly, the fan inside was hitting the inside of the barrel. It probably got crooked or dislodged somehow... and the dryer was unusable. Not sure how that would have happened; I don't recall dropping it, but if I had, the fall would have been 6 inches onto a carpeted floor. Luckily, the rattling started just one day before the return window closed for my purchase -- so I was able to send it back.
Note that as of March 2011, CHI does not recognize Amazon as an authorized seller of its products and thus does not cover Amazon purchases under their warranty. Personally, I trust that items Amazon sells directly are not counterfeit, but I would not say the same from its third party sellers... which is where I happened to buy this hair dryer from. (To see whether the item is sold directly by Amazon or by a third party seller, look for a "ships from and sold by" or "sold by" note on the main product page.) Amazon was kind enough to let me return the item, but I would have been out of luck and a lot of money if this happened past the return window.
Looking over the more recent reviews of this product on Amazon and elsewhere on the web, it seems that a lot of similar problems began to surface around the same period. The heating mechanism pooping out seems to be another common issue. Maybe the quality of the product has simply declined over the years, or (more likely) that's when counterfeits of this product starting floating about out there. Either way, it seems like there are better options out there than purchasing this product.
