I have been coloring my hair for many years. I have naturally red hair (which is naturally easily broken or damaged), and amp it up a bit to pop the red. Not a big difference, and I don't have high octane peroxides used on my hair, but a consistent (every 6 weeks) application for touch up and pulling it through. (I have it done at a salon, using Redken products.) My hair is very fine and breaks easily (but I have a LOT of hair) and is naturally curly/wavy. I have never been able to get it to grow past shy of my elbow, because of breakage. Right now it's about 2 inches longer than my shoulder. I have been using salon products from Sally Beauty Supply, made for dry hair (including a reconditioning conditioner). My usual products do leave my hair in good condition.
I chose this product to review because I am always interested in testing out the new quality hair products that come onto the market. This one is so highly touted, I couldn't believe that it could possibly measure up to the hype.
The timing was perfect for me to try this. The kit is designed to use from the get-go after your hair being freshly dyed. My hair was retouched just the day before I received it and I do not usually wash it for 24 hours after being done, so it was still fresh from the salon.
I was surprised at how small the bottles are for the price. While the kit certainly is a GREAT deal in comparison to the regular prices when purchasing separately, it is still a significant expense for hair products. I guess that the kit will last me about 2-3 weeks, if I am lucky. Like I said, I have thick hair, and this shampoo does not foam up much, so I felt inclined to use more (maybe more than I needed to) than I would usually use with my Sally products.
The scent is, in a word, beautiful. It is subtle, clean, and sooo pleasant. I did get the shampoo in my eyes, and OMG it burned badly. (I get shampoo in my eyes often, and this was definitely a bigger burn than I'm used to.)
My hair, after using the shampoo and conditioner, felt very clean and soft. I used the mask, and LOVED it. My hair felt not shiny slick, but silky soft (even while wet). You MUST rinse with cold water to close the cuticle of your hair. If you don't feel up to rinsing with cold water, then skip the mask until you are ready. Actually, with "any" conditioning product, it is a good idea to rinse with cold/cool water to close that cuticle and leave your hair *much* smoother and softer.
When I went to dry my hair (I use a positive ion charged Chi dryer), I was just thrilled with the texture and feel of my hair. It felt like a big silky mass of the hair you see on tv commercials. I did not use my flat iron--I usually do--because it looked so awesome just dried.
I went to the salon that afternoon and had my stylist (and others in the salon) check out my hair. All were complimenting me on my hair, and wanted to know "what" this product was that I used on it. They are very familiar with my hair, (I've been going there for some time) and noticed how GREAT it looked.
I use a lot of Chi products, and they are really great, too. BUT my hair usually comes away looking overly shiny and some days even looks oily. This product left my hair looking shiny and smooth, healthy and bouncy. Even one of my guy-friends (a typical guy who doesn't notice girl things--you know what I mean) mentioned that my hair looked really great. I asked him to elaborate (for the sake of this review) and his take was, "It looks bigger--no, not bigger like size--but more noticable. It looks like I want to touch it." I liked his assessment. haha
So, if you can afford this product, then go for it. There are certainly more affordable products out there that will care for your hair (like those that I use from the beauty supply) but if you have a special event, or you want to switch things up for awhile, this is a good choice. A warning, though--if you buy this for the purpose of switching things up temporarily, you might get hooked on it ;)
Edit/Additional Info: I just used it without the mask and it isn't quite as silky...so the mask definitely makes a difference. I followed directions completely and even rinsed in cool/cold water, but it still isn't quite as excellent as it was with the mask.
