I have hair that is about two to three inches above my shoulder, which is just not long enough for me to twist into a pretty bun. The hair rat is a great way to get a very nice, substantially sized bun.
The device is very simplistic in nature. It is a sponge covered with a mesh like material. The hair rat snaps together to form a circle shape (or bun shape). Think of it like a skeleton for the perfect bun.
The directions included with the hair rat indicate that the device should be placed at the end of the hair and then the hair should be rolled upward and the hair rat snapped together. If you have longer hair, this works. If you lack long hair, the hair rat will roll right out. Even if the directions work for you, good luck snapping the hair rat together without a pal present. What I did was create a ponytail. I then snapped the hair rat together and looped my ponytail through the hair rat. I then brushed the hair at the top of the ponytail upwards and over the hair rat and tucked it under the hair rat and pinned it. I repeated this process all the way around the hair rat, drawing the hair over, tucking and then pinning with bobby pins. The result was a very pretty bun. Note: This process is even easier when hair is wet.
Two things that I don't love: 1)I have blonde hair but my hair is a little darker than the blonde hair rat and lighter than the brown hair rat. If your hair is wound around the device, then you shouldn't be able to see any of the hair rat but throughout the day wisps may come loose and the sponge becomes visible. This is when it would be nice to have a variety of colors available so it wouldn't be so apparent that a sponge is beneath the perfect bun shape. 2)Snapping the hair rat together can be quite the chore if you choose to follow the instructions for placing the hair rat.
According to the directions, the hair rat is washable. I have not had to wash the device yet but when I do I will be placing it in a washing bag for delicate items. The snapping mechanism is secured with thread and if it came off in the wash, it would make the creation of the perfect bun slightly difficult.
