Hi all,
I recently went natural (via a buzz cut of my 15 inch hair in January. Since I got it recut in April, its only 1.5-2 inches long right now. I do plan to let it grow out) and I have been trying so many products to bring back my defined curls, then washing them out when they didnt work. I dont know if my hair is a 3-something or a 4-something but when my hair grows out, it is somewhat oily and it grows in very silky, very shiny, but somewhat stiff, tight "matress spring" curls..except the middle of my head and the back, which grows in loose S shape or C shape (but after washing, combing, sleeping, etc, my defined curls became puff). I saw reviews of this product on Youtube but didnt get it at first because I didnt really want an "artificial" or "wet" look...but after trying all this other crap that didnt work, the other day I was like "Maybe this is The One". Because of the price, I was hesitant to buy it at the Whole Foods store (they only had the $25 jar)...since I wasnt sure if I'd like it. But then an employee told me I could return it no problem if I didnt like it...so I bought it. At first, I used my own leave-in conditioner (less than half a teaspoon worth of "The Detangler" by Paul Mitchell blended with Creme of Nature Leave-in conditioner)...I applied the Kinky Curly while my hair was soaking wet. I have Thick hair. For comparison, I parted my hair in the middle and used only a dime size, at most, on the left side...Keeping in mind a Youtube review that said to make sure that every strand feels slippery of product/coated. There was a whiteish color in my hair that went away as the product dried. When it dried, it felt pretty good compared to other gels...not crunchy. And it did define Some of my curls/made them go from puffy to identity...but only about 40%...the rest was still a little frizzy and dry looking. So I guess I hadnt used enough?? I read in some forum that you have to be very careful about how much you apply. I almost returned it then and there...but I figured id give it One more try, using the Kinky Curly shampoo and conditioner. I read that you should partly rinse out the conditioner so that you just leave a little, so I did that. And the 2nd try, I had my hair wet/damp, but not dripping wet and I used 2 nickel-sizes worth all over my head. But, the 2nd time's results were very much the same. This did bring out some of my curls, but not to the point that I'm going to keep it. Just slightly better results than if I had used a regular gel. Perhaps I did something wrong :(
I guess maybe I'll chill out with trying products for now (reading great reviews then getting crappy results has me feeling like "Does no one have my hair type??" or "are these people getting paid to say this?" lol). Im not a superficial type anyway (way bigger things to worry about). My hair has gotten really dry from trying products then washing them out almost everyday for a week...so I've been getting tangles a lot lately but usually I get very few.
*FYI: I was not looking for this to "create" curls or make them bouncy or stiff or anything else...simply "define"/slick so that the hairs clump together and you can see their shape. Some gels stretch my curls down/make them somewhat straight. Some gels just look like they shined my hair but didnt do any clumping or contouring. Just because it didnt work for me doesnt mean it wont work for you. Most of the Youtube videos I saw were women with more tightly curled hair than mine...so maybe thats who it works for best...I have no idea. In this case, the only thing that matters is that it didnt work for Me. Oh, but the sample pack of the shampoo was nice - it did not make my hair feel squeaky clean/stripped of oils, but moisturized. And the Knot Today is serious about detangling! :) But...I'll stick with my lovely Creme of Nature Ultra-Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner (about $3 each) - LOVE the smell and moisture it leaves...although Im not crazy about their leave-in (but I do like the M.O.M. hair lotion and Royal Roots hair lotion).
