Customer Review: Wonderful [better] alternative to chemical dye

I have been colouring my hair for 13 years, and I've done it all - permanent chemical dyes, bleaching, florescent manic panic, and hennas. Henna is a wonderful alternative for those who do no want to damage their hair and scalp with the harsh chemicals found in grocery store kits and salon dyes.
It may be quicker and easier to use a chemical dye, but if you do it repeatedly - years later your hair really will begin to thin out. Henna is a little more work during the process, but unlike chemical dyes which strip your hair of its natural oils, it conditions your hair while dying. You'll find your hair is thicker and healthier in appearance, and you wont have that awful, sinking feeling of "What have I done?!!" that you can experience in the shower after a chemical dye, as you're watching half of your hair washing down the drain.
If you want the intense bleach-white colour needed for special fx or manic panic colours, unless you're already blonde, henna just will not cut it. You really will have to bleach your hair. If, however, you're looking for a deep natural colour or an intense red or burgundy, henna will be a wonderful choice.
Have a friend over to help you, because yes, it gets messy. My friend and I have found that pouring the warm mixture into a gallon size ziploc and cutting off one corner (like icing a cake, almost) is a good method of application. Wear gloves (as with any dye), go slowly and wipe excess off the skin around the hairline. For really intense colour, many people put saran wrap over the dye and then a bandanna or towel over that, and sleep on it. There are also tricks you can use to push the colour in a certain direction - we added paprika to the red henna (perhaps too much) and WOW! More red than she'd expected, but tons of complements and the shine was remarkable, especially considering we applied it to her not-so-shiny dreadlocks.
13 years later, after starting out dying my hair as a pre-teen who had not a single care for whether the chemicals were damaging or not, I still (thank goodness) have a head of hair. It does show signs of damage from all the years of abuse though (thinner strands, and not as thick of a head of hair all-around). I am still addicted to changing my haircolour though, so I'm grateful that henna is a healthy option. Take the extra time and care to use this product and you can rest well knowing that you're NOT causing harm to your future beauty!
