If you want to go black, but don't want to have to grow it out or bleach it to hell and back when you're sick of it, I recommend this product.
It lasts about a week or so for me before it starts fading (It fades beautifully to lighter and lighter browns before it starts to look gross about a month later).
I always bleach first (a blonde dye might work too). It will come out a jet-black color on bleached hair. I have tried dying several persons' hair without bleaching, and it just doesn't turn out. It will at the very best turn brown or purple (some blonde hair will even turn a yucky green). On some persons' hair, there is virtually no effect from dying without bleaching.
The way I dye my hair is bleach for 30-60 minutes, shampoo (DONT CONDITION!), apply this hair color (I like to spike it up into a mohawk just for kicks, but this step is optional :p ); let it sit for hours, preferably until it dries. You can also put a shower cap on and blow dry to ensure that the dye really seeps into your hair. You could even sleep on it (with a shower cap of course!). Also, wait at least 2 days before shampooing, and shampoo every other day at the most. These are the best methods for Manic Panic and other vegetable-based dyes.
It smells kind of weird, but it isn't that strong (certainly no worse than permanent dyes), and I haven't been able to detect the smell after washing.
