Customer Review: Works great on adults. For toddlers- try socks instead.
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this is a last ditch effort to get my then 13mth old son to stop sucking his two fingers. He had sucked them to the point of being literally raw and blistering. We'd tried just about everything else we could think of before turning to this product.

The day it arrived in the mail I immediately pulled it out of the box, pulled my son onto my lap and proceeded to paint those two finger nails. At first it seemed to work. One suck and his faced screwed up like he'd just sucked a lemon. After trying desperately not to laugh, I spent the next two hours blissfully NOT saying "Don't suck your fingers!" The silence was heaven. But then after about 2hrs I noticed he was happily sucking away again. So I reapplied the product. Another 2 hours without sucking. Another coat...and so on for the next 48hrs (except while sleeping of course).

By the end of the second day my son had GROWN ACCUSTOMED TO THE TASTE and would suck his fingers within minutes after applying the product!

We ended up wrapping his hand in socks, mittens, and first aid wraps for the next two months (taking it off only for eating) while the fingers healed. When we finally stopped wrapping his hand he seemed to need to suck less than before. Since then he continues to suck lightly whenever he is tired or hungry or nervous. Because it hasn't gotten raw or blistered again, we've let it be. If it does get raw again we may try the Mavala again since we still have the bottle, but I wouldn't buy it again.

Incidentally, during one application I had the misfortune to spill some on my jeans and hands. Although I immediately washed my hands *thoroughly*, the taste remained *very* strong for several hours. I accidentally touched my lips by habit once and was rewarded with a lingering AWFUL HORRIBLE taste on my lips for over 2 hours! It took DAYS for the taste to completely go away from my fingers!!! Thus, I can say with some certainty that it ought to stop most grownups from EATING anything at all that requires using your fingers to assemble or eat it (the taste transfers from your fingers to the food), let alone stopping someone from biting their nails! It came off my jeans with one run through the washer.

Customer Review: I am still in shock!

I must share our story regarding this product. My daughter is five years old and comes from a very long line of thumb-suckers (three generations that I know of). I (her Mom) am shamed to admit I sucked my thumb until age 15 when braces prevented the practice.
So when my daughter broke her thumb-sucking arm seven months ago, we thought surely having to wear a cast for four weeks would effortlessly break the habit for us. We were very disappointed when as soon as the cast came off, the habit immediately continued. I began to research other methods to help break the habit. I found two devices which are placed over the hand/thumb, and was having such a difficult time trying to choose one that I never got around to ordering either of them. Then one day my daughter came home from school and asked me if I had ordered the thumb cover to help her stop sucking her thumb. So that day, I prepared to order both devices when my husband pointed out if wearing a cast for four weeks didn't break the habit, neither will any other device we applied. He made a valid point. However after reading some of the reviews for Mavala Stop I was concerned this was too strong and bordered on "child abuse" as one reviewer put it. Even my own Mom had applied a few products to my thumb as a child, but I simply washed it off. Out of desperation we ordered it, of course tasting it before applying it to our child. But the miracle is, it worked! My daughter has not sucked her thumb since that day now five months ago. We even prepared for middle of the night awakenings (some parents recommended having juice near the bed with which to rinse out the taste) but we didn't even have those issues! The taste is unpleasant, but not so much that I would call it child abuse by any means. Some people may have a stronger reaction to this product than others, so I am not discrediting those who feel this product is too bitter. But I absolutely suggest trying it. The cost makes it a very inexpensive trial. At the risk of sounding corny: One bottle of Mavala Stop- eight dollars; Having my daughter feel proud of herself for breaking a very difficult and embarrassing habit, PRICELESS. Good luck to you all- Mrs. P

Customer Review: AMAZING, FANTASTIC, AND WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!!

THIS PRODUCT IS AMAZING! My son who will be 5 next month has sucked his thumb since birth. He would ALWAYS have his thumb in mouth when he woke up, during the day, at pre-school, playing, sleeping, ALWAYS! I was at first going to purchase a product called "thumb guard" but it was $80.00, so I happened to come across "MAVALA STOP" on Amazon. What a relief, the price was only $9.95 plus shipping. After reading the reviews, I was convinced this was for my little guy. I was a little hesitant because one review said there was no information in English or what the ingredients were. That is incorrect information! My bottle came in a box that had English directions and ingredients. So as a consumer I was fully informed of what I had purchased. The first day I put the MAVALA stop on his thumbs and fingers. He sucked his thumb and got a taste and he must have spit for 3 hours straight, and the stuff would get on his food. And he kept waking up in the night because he would go to suck his thumb like he always does, but the next day he only had a few "nasty tastes" and by the 3rd day, in time for school he was not sucking his thumb!!!! He has not sucked his thumb since then, and this was the boy who was "one with his thumb!" If you are going to use this to nip the thumb sucking, I recommend only putting this product on the fingernails only and not the thumb because I had to buy plastic gloves for my son to eat his food. And I would not put this on a child who cannot understand what is on their fingers and unable to talk fully with mommy or daddy. THIS STUFF IS NASTY!!! And it would be cruel to put on a child who has no understanding, in my motherly opinion. Now my little guy did throw up only once when he took this first big suck on the thumb. So be prepared and I recommend buying a sucker for licks after your little one puts their thumb in their mouth to curb the bitter taste. And have a wet wash cloth nearby to help at night when they wake up, with the "taste" on their tongue. Sorry for the long review but I really wanted to help give parents and informed decision.

Customer Review: Worked with only 2 applications!!!

My 2-year-old was a BIG thumb-sucker. Her thumb was always red, and the fingernail had stopped growing and looked awful. Her sucking was also affecting her teeth, and our dentist wanted her to quit sucking by her 3rd birthday. I thought about buying a thumb guard because I didn't think a liquid would work. But rather than pay a lot of money for a guard, our dentist recommended Mavala Stop. I applied one coat (not just to her nail, but over the whole thumb). She put her thumb in her mouth once and immediately took it out and tried to wipe the taste off her tongue. The desire to suck her thumb was GONE - no complaining. I touched her thumb to my tongue a week later and could still taste the bitterness (from that ONE coat)! I even tried to get her to suck her thumb again (just to see if she would), and she refused. She said it was nasty. My husband DID catch her a week later (2 weeks after the original application) sucking at bedtime. So I put one more coat on, and she never did it again. After a year, her thumb is normal, the nail is normal, and the dentist said her teeth are fine now too. She's forgotten that she ever sucked her thumb!
My friend's 4-year-old was a bedtime sucker. I gave the bottle to her a couple of weeks ago since I didn't need it anymore. Since it hadn't been opened in a while, I warned her and her husband NOT to try to open the bottle with their teeth (I made that mistake once and it was awful). Her husband couldn't open it by hand and thought that the taste would be off the bottle after such a long time of not using it, so he used his teeth. My friend called me in tears, laughing at her husband trying to wipe the taste out of his mouth! Anyway, he got it open, they used it on their 4-year-old just one time, and she hasn't sucked her thumb since!
Be warned - it tastes worse than anything you can imagine. But it definitely works! If you have a child who is a thumb-sucker or a nail-biter, this is the best deterrent out there. And for $9 (plus shipping), the price can't be beat!!!

Customer Review: Working like a charm on a stubborn 4yr old girl
Summary: 5 Stars

I was skeptical of any product for eliminating thumbsucking, especially when I was seeing thumb apparatus for stopping it. I had my questions: how would she eat, hold a fork or pencil? Would I have to put her in this while she was at school because I know she sucks her thumb when she's there? Wow! The cost of some are unbelievable (over $100)!

The reviews for Mavala were so great and cost was minimal compared to the other options, I figured why not.

We have been explaining to her that she is a big girl and needs to stop sucking her thumb. She would suck while watching TV, riding in a car, listening to a story, the park, the grocery store, basically anywhere her hands weren't occupied. She finally agreed to stopping and I told her we were getting her some nailpolish to help her stop.

She was excited to put it on because it is nailpolish but the first time she put her thumb in her mouth she started to gag; not the "I'm going to get sick" gag but the "Holy cow, what did I just put in my mouth" gag. I will admit that she did cry a few days later when I wanted to put more on. She sat in my lap, crying and saying, "throw that yucky stuff away, Mommy, throw it away, it's so yucky."

And I will also admit that she was crying so hard that I almost did stop treatment. I held her tight and looked at her and said, "You know what though? You're doing such a great job with not sucking your thumb! Have you noticed that you don't suck your thumb anymore? You're getting to be such a big girl like your sisters!!" And that little bit of encouragement made the tears stop and made her hold her thumb out and say, "OK, Mommy, you can put it on again."

This stuff is grand and I recommend it to everyone who has a thumbsucker or who bites their nails. I put some on my thumb to show my daughter that I can wear it too. Later that night I brush my thumb passed my lips and started gagging like my daughter! haha. This stuff is awful but very effective. It works! And hopefully we can stave off braces!
