Customer Reviews of Mavala Stop - Helps Cure Nail Biting and Thumb Sucking, 0.3-Fluid OunceCustomer Review: Did not work for us at all. Summary: 1 Stars
My son is 3 years old and is constantly sucking his thumb day and night and so I was looking for a product that would help him get rid of that habit. I bought this after reading all the rave reviews and testimonials from other people on this site who said it worked for them.
But for me it made no difference whatsoever. I applied it on my son's right thumbnail the same day we got it just before his bed time. When he first sucked his thumb right after that he was in a bit of shock at the bad taste and had to drink water and gargle it out to get the taste out of his mouth. For a second I got excited that this just might work. But, as soon as he fell asleep after about 20 mins later, his right thumb instinctively went back in to his mouth and I could hear the same thumb sucking sound he always makes when he is sucking his thumb dry. The next day I asked me and he said it does not bother him at all, he said "look, I sucked it all from my thumb".
I have applied it 2 more times after that day and it has had no effect, his thumb sucking continues as usual.
So basically, it did not work for us and actually it is in the same category as other products such as "THUM" that don't work.
Something else that I found annoying was that at least THUM lists the ingredients that it contains, for this product, you have no ideal what's inside or what it is made up of. The so called instruction sheet hardly has any details and it just one paragraph of information inside without any details about the contents.
Also the product's box was not sealed when I received it. The bottle was most likely sealed but not the box. (there is no way to tell really as it was closed tightly but did not have any seal on the lid) The top paper lid/cover had been opened and a crumpled piece of paper was stuffed inside on top of the bottle as if to protect the bottle during shipping, that is after having three layers in the packaging alredy so it made me a bit wary as to why someone would do that.
Customer Review: Amazing Product -- Stopped 2.5 Year-Old's Thumb-sucking in One Day Summary: 5 Stars
Our daughter is 2 and-a-half and loved to suck her thumb. All of the time, especially when going to sleep. My wife and I didn't have any concern (given how young she is, we figured she would grow out of it), but our dentist said that her teeth were getting out of position and that we should try to get her to stop. We looked at thumb guards, but they looked so bulky for a toddler, so we bought this product after a recommendation from a friend. For about a week, we tried to get our daughter to stop sucking her thumb by encouragement and rewards, but she was too young for that to work and said that stopping sucking her thumb would make her feel "sad." You know, she would say "go away," and then she would suck her thumb. So, we bought Mavala and explained to her that this would help her stop sucking her thumb. At first, she didn't want it, but then she said she wanted to stop sucking her thumb and wanted to try it. We put one coat on her left thumb, and immediately were told, "I don't like that," and "wash that off" and "I don't like that taste." Heard it many times and each time, we tried to change the subject. And, guess what -- she STOPPED sucking her thumb. At night, this girl who always fell asleep with her thumb in her mouth stopped as well. It wasn't the easiest night, but the next day and night things were so much better. We are on day 3 and we reapplied a coat to make sure we don't lose any of the gains, but so far, this is working like a charm and, as a parent, have to say it has been relatively painless. Sure, it was cute when her thumb was in her mouth and she was sleeping. But it wouldn't be cute when in a few years her teeth would be all misaligned and we would be paying substantial orthodontic bills. In short, if you are considering this product even for someone as young as two and a half, as long as he or she can somewhat understand what is going on, then this product could not be more recommended.
Customer Review: Only Wish I Had Tried This Stuff First! Summary: 5 Stars
Since my now 4-year-old son was three months old, he's sucked his thumb.
It's rare that we can find a photo of him without his thumb being in the vicinity of his mouth; not always in but definitely nearby at the ready!
My husband and I have tried everything to get him to stop this horrible habit: promises of rewards, pepper, Tabasco sauce....you name it, we tried it.
Taking into consideration that my now 13-year-old sucked his two middle fingers until he was three (stopping on his own), we even tried waiting it out.
However, after doing plenty of research, I learned it is an absolute must that children stop sucking their thumb by time their permanent front teeth are coming in; which is typically around the age of 5.
Not to mention that I really didn't want to send a kid off to kindergarten still sucking his thumb.
After all of our other efforts appeared to be fruitless, I decided to give some "reminder fluid" a try.
Searching all of the information out there on "reminder fluids" and reading personal reviews on each product, I opted for the Mavala Stop for Nail Biting and Thumb Sucking.
Wow! Is this stuff amazing! Hindsight makes me wish I'd saved all the trial and error and started at this point.
Just minutes after applying the first coat, I saw a streak of little person running to the refrigerator to grab some water. It tasted that horrible!
Since the first time I applied the stuff to his thumb, he's never sucked it again. Just to ensure the breaking of this orally unhealthy habit, I applied it a few more times but it really wasn't necessary.
Mavala Stop is easy to use: paint on thumb as you would nail polish, dries clear within seconds. Although the smell and taste is horrendous, it is non-toxic and safe for consumption.
Customer Review: A Wonderful Product! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this product for my 7 and 4 year old children. Both kids are nail biters and despite my best efforts to get them to stop, nothing worked. That is, until I bought this nail polish. After the first application it began its magic and after only a week of applying it (and that's only been two applications because you paint it on once every two days) the nail biting is all but gone. I have to tell you, I tried it myself and the taste is absolutely terrible. It goes in mild but after a second it is repulsive and depending on how long the finger was in your mouth it tends to stay with you. A drink of water and washing the lips gets rid of the taste though, but I have to admit, it is a powerful deterrent--and no amount of hand washing gets rid of it on the fingers! My kids actually came close to vomiting because the taste was so terrible. The only downside comes when eating, especially with my 4 year old because her fingers sometimes go into her mouth by accident. You could count that as a positive though if you are picky about table manners.
My kids fingers were in very bad shape before using this polish making them self conscious and ashamed to have others look at them. Now the nails are actually starting to grow and the ragged appearance is starting to go away. They are now proud to show off their shiny nails and that is worth much more to me than any price this polish could possibly be.
My advice is to go ahead and get this polish if your own kids need help with nail biting or thumb sucking and are at an age to appreciate the help. I've told mine that the polish is there to help make their nails all better and they love getting their "medicine" to make their nails shiny. This stuff works and is worth every penny.
Customer Review: Works for long-time nail biters! Summary: 5 Stars
I've been chewing my nails for over 30 years. I've tried to quit many times, and used other "bitter tasting" products on my nails that never worked because the taste was just not enough to override my compulsion to chew my nails.
As an adult now studying to go into a law enforcement profession where bad nails can be a vector for infection and disease-transmission, I NEED to stop doing this or I put my life at risk. Malava Stop works for me. It's been a month since I chewed my nails and I'm starting to use nail polish and nail care products seriously for the first time in my life (OMG I'm going to become a nail polish freak).
To say that this stuff tastes bad doesn't even come close. It's NOT hot/spicy like pepper, and is hard to describe, but your reaction to it is immediate and visceral ("UGGHHH that was a bad idea"). The best part about it is that the taste LINGERS. It isn't something that's momentarily bitter and then stops. If you make the mistake of sticking a finger in your mouth, you will remember it for HOURS afterward. In this respect it works like behavioral conditioning at the animal level.
I would suggest switching to a fork for eating while using this product, as the taste does interfere with eating foods with your bare fingers. Even if you remove the product (such as if a child deliberately strips the stuff off as soon as you're out of sight), you will still taste it strongly for at least a day or two. So if you're using this on your kids to stop them from nail biting, they won't be able to remove the product to get rid of the taste.
This product, like anything of its type, works best in combination with willpower and a commitment to stop chewing your nails.
