Customer Review: Works Great!!
Summary: 5 Stars

My soon to be 7 year old "was" a thumbsucker up until 2 weeks ago. We tried everything from thumb splints, bandaids, mittens, bribes of toys, positive reinforcement but nothing would help. There is a another fingernail product out there at local dept stores that claims to have a bitter taste. I bought that only to find out it is cayenne pepper, which to me is cruel so I threw that out after trying it, and confirming it does put your mouth on fire. We brought her to the orthodontist for a consultation and they wanted $250 to glue a device in the mouth. I read it can cause soreness for several days. Then I saw this product online, and the awful taste claim without any cayenne pepper in it, so I purchased it. We applied that to both thumbs along with a lot of positive reinforcement and encouragement (never a negative comment). It's important kids get extra hugs and cuddle time to substitute the security their thumb provides. I tried the product and it is very nasty tasting and it linguers, but not a cruel taste. The first few days my daughter would sometimes forget and put her thumb in, and you will want water handy to wash the taste away. My daughter has been thumb free for 2 weeks, and she has broken the night time subconscious act of putting her thumb in her mouth. I can't believe this is not available at the pharmacy. I highly recommend.

Customer Review: It worked so fast!

Yeah!!! I'm so happy! My 9 and 7-year-old daughters had this thumb-sucking habit for so many years. Doctors always dismissed my concerns, but the habit only became more and more fixed. I'm ashamed to say that sometimes I berated them. I wish I hadn't. We'd tried a pepper-flavored product before, but they got used to the taste. It just wasn't enough of a deterrent. I was interested in some of the gadgets a child wears on the thumb, but thought I'd give this cheaper product a try first. I think I only had to apply it 2 or 3 times on each child's thumb. It really must taste awful. My older daughter did have a gagging episode, but just once. Then she truly stopped sucking her thumb! It is still amazing to me to look in the car's rear-view mirror and see them free of thumb-sucking!
If you plan to use this for a very young child, I suggest scanning these reviews first for more opinions. I don't know if I could put a little one through the experience of the awful taste. My kids were old enough to deal with the yuck and the gagging. Maybe it is worth it for a baby to experience this in order to stop the habit. So many people told me that this habit would fall away, but in our experience it just got worse. I would advise any parent to try to help the child stop early, and not just hope it will go away, like I did.

Customer Review: Worked for me!!!

I've bitten my nails horribly for almost 30 years, and tried all sorts of habit-breaking tactics to try and quit. At the point of giving up I thought I would give this a try. I'm so glad I did. It's been almost 3 weeks now since I first started putting this on, and I haven't bitten my nails once.

I noticed a few things about this that surprised me. One, it lasts and lasts, and also soaks into the skin around your fingertip so that if you bite or pull at your cuticles, this will effect that as well. One coat (I brush it over the end of the nail and on the skin around the nail as well) lasts almost 4-5 days. The taste is really bitter and unpleasant, but the worst part is that you can't get it out of your mouth once you've touched your finger to your lips. The other thing I noticed is that it is so powerful, that if you're even eating chips or other finger food, the taste will rub off on what you're eating - even if you're very careful! I've also learned to be careful about touching my lips with any part of my fingertips as it rubs off then too.

This has been so effective that I have been using it less and less, and still managing to be deterred from the thought of bringing my hands to my mouth.

My sister is now using this with her daughter for thumbsucking as it worked so well for me!

Customer Review: Awesome for stopping thumb-sucking!
Summary: 5 Stars

My son has sucked his thumb from the time he was eight weeks old. He is now three. We tried just encouraging him to stop and using the Fireman Fred booklet and puppet. Both didn't work. I put a band-aid on his thumb every day and that helped but he still couldn't break the habit. Then over Christmas break, I put the Mavala stop on and he IMMEDIATELY stopped thumb-sucking and hasn't done it since. I did one follow-up brushing on the nail and the cuticle line -just to be absolutely sure- and that was it.

He found the taste HORRIBLE. Keep in mind that when eating the thumb may come into contact with the mouth and be a yucky experience during mealtimes. Just have a drink ready and the bad taste will eventually dissipate.

This is a wonderful product! It worked for us. I will be using it on my younger son when he is old enough per the package directions.

Some tips: Use the mavala stop when you have nothing going on and can deal with your child's irritability during the day, and some restless sleep -or even crying at night. A few days to a week and things should be much better at night. Also keep in mind that the thumb is a soother, so it may take awhile for your child to emotionally adjust.

I highly recommend this product.

Customer Review: Best I've Seen to Date
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this product for a friend after reviewing what was out there. He's been chewing his fingernails for at least 20 years by his own account. I tried this on my nails (although I'm not a biter) and it tastes AWFUL! I can't imagine getting used to the taste...and if I ever did, I'd have bigger problems than nail biting (laugh)! And it lasts, so you're not constantly re-applying. I was sure the horrible taste would wear out in a day or two, but it lasts for at least five days! Sure, it leaves a "polish" on your nails (like clear nail polish). But that's where the flavor is...where they keep the "magic", if you will. And hey, you actually HAVE nails! For some, it's not a vanity issue at all. Some people are actually ruining their teeth by biting their nails. What a shame! And my friend has lovely teeth. I'd hate to see him ruin them.

Like any self-administered aversion therapy, you have to be committed. And he is. Just like any habit, though, it's hard and you have to maintain your commitment to quitting. I am an ex-smoker and can thoroughly feel for what he's going through. It's an excellent aid to the committed quitter. We'll keep you posted, but I guarantee, if any taste-aversion therapy is going to work, this is it!

Good luck!
