Price: 5/5
The price is right. At roughly 3 cents per stick (depending on where you purchase your incense and excluding shipping charges), a large box (200 sticks) of Morning Star incense is a great deal. Also included in the package is a small ceramic incense burner suitable for use with most Japanese incense.
Packaging: 3/5
The packaging is adequate, but not exceptional. The box is sturdy and the design tasteful. The incense is wrapped in thick paper (an instruction manual and catalogue request form in this instance) which helps preserve product integrity. While the quality of the packaging could be better, it is superior to the string of yarn which is sometimes used by other companies.
Construction: 5/5
The construction of the incense sticks is great, on par with much more expensive Japanese incense. All Japanese incense is made without a bamboo stick center. While the resulting product is quite fragile, it also produces less smoke than the incense generally found in the States.
Color: 0/5
Not much to say here. The incense is a grass green color rather than the expected dark brown. The appearance is quite unsettling.
Longevity: 3/5
After burning one stick, scent remained noticeable for approximately 3 hours. Expect longevity to decrease as the essential oils dry out (unless incense is stored in a humidor)

In order to offer the greatest number of sticks at the lowest possible price, Nippon Kodo compromised quality. When lit, the product produces a slightly acrid aroma vaguely reminiscent of burning wood, cheap soap and synthetic florals. While perhaps not altogether unpleasant (one cannot fully account for the tastes of others), the fragrance is a far cry from the hearty, deep sandalwood one would expect from a well established incense company.
Conclusion:
A great value if (and this is a big if) the scent appeals to you. If you're looking for decent quality sandalwood incense, you might be better off going with a different product. I highly recommend Byakudan Kobunboku by Baieido.
