Customer Reviews of Porcelain Flat IronsCustomer Review: Potential Fire Hazard! Summary: 1 Stars
My daughter purchased this 1-1/2" Jilbere flatiron five months ago from Sally Beauty Supply, based on a recommendation from her hair stylist. (Despite the French-sounding name, this device is made in China, just like the flatirons you can purchase at any discount store.) My daughter used the Jilbere flatiron almost daily, on a setting of 10 (out of 30). Two days ago the flatiron overheated, started smoking, and singed my daugher's hair while she was using it. Luckily my daughter unplugged it quickly. After the flatiron had cooled you could see what appears to be melted plastic around the edges of the heating surfaces. The washcloth my daughter set the flatiron down on to protect the countertop surface also had burn marks. It is lucky that the flatiron was not left unattended at the time that it thermally self-destructed, or the collateral damage could have been much more severe.
This Jilbere flatiron had a 1 year warranty, and we still had the original purchase receipt, so my wife took it back to the Sally Beauty Supply store where my daughter had purchased it. We figured that the folks at Sally might be interested in knowing that the product they are selling has a defect that causes it to fail in an "unfriendly" fashion. Apparently not. The Manager at the Sally store seemed to think the whole affair was comical. All she would do was give my wife a card with the 1-800 phone numbers for (40) of Sally's vendors, so we could call Jilbere ourselves if we so chose.
I suppose we could send the defective flatiron to a "repair center" to be reconditioned under the warranty (Jilbere's warranty requires the customer to pay for shipping, in addition to an extra $5 fee). However, that would mean that my daughter would be without a flatiron for the 4-6 weeks that a repair would take. (Anyone with a teenage daughter of their own realizes that's just not a viable alternative.) And, we have lost confidence in Jilbere due to this incident anyway.
Needless to say, we will be avoiding Jilbere products, as well as Sally Beauty Supply, in the future.
If you choose to purchase a Jilbere flatiron, please be extra careful, and never leave it unattended!
