EDITED to correct error on my part: In the review below I state that I rated this straightener with only four stars because it needs a way to lock the buttons while you are using it to prevent accidentally turning it off or changing temperature while styling your hair. I have since discovered by accident that it DOES have this functionality. Having now checked the manual, I see that Remington even included the instructions for the locking feature in the manual, but I overlooked it. My only defense is that I was reading it first thing in the morning... With this new knowledge, I believe the Remington S1051 deserves five stars, and would change it if Amazon allowed us to change ratings on reviews.
I've never used a hair straightener before, but have been curious what it would do for my hair. My hair is straight, but with enough wave in it that it has a mind of its own. It is fine, and hangs down to the bottom of my shoulder blades, with some long layers in the cut.
Using the Remington S1051 was easy, even for a beginner like me. Although it took me a moment to get it turned on the first time, actually using it on my hair was a breeze.
The Remington S1051 has a digital temperature gauge, so you can program the heat level for your hair type. The instructions even include recommendations on the temperature settings for different types of hair.
The straightener smoothes quickly and easily. It does heat the hair pretty quickly and my hair tended to get pretty hot after two passes. I found that it was easier to smooth the bottom half of a hair section first, and then go back to the root and give it one more pass. This keeps the area I am holding cool to the touch while I work the bottom.
The only negative I found with the Remington S1051 was that the buttons are easy to press accidentally while you are styling your hair. They are placed in the handle in the area I hold the device, and I had to pay attention to keep from turning it off or changing the temperature while trying to work with it. It is especially difficult to avoid the buttons when styling the back sections of my hair. It would be nice if there were a `lock' feature that prevented the buttons from being activated while it is locked, or I would recommend moving the buttons to a different area on the handle.
All in all, I really like the device a lot and it has become a regular part of my hair styling routine. I like to change my style frequently, so I use this a few times a week, roll it once or twice, and do the wash and go bit probably once a week. Right now my favorite is the straightener, mostly because of how easy and quick it is to use, and of course because of how nice my hair looks after I have styled it with the Remington S1051.
I would have rated this straightener with 5 stars if it weren't for the issue I have with the buttons.
