Customer Reviews of Seki Edge Stainless Steel Fingernail ClipperCustomer Review: Outstanding fingernail clipper ... someone finally got it right Summary: 5 Stars
Each of us has certain tools or accessories in which we are more or less interested than the average person. Maybe you're totally wrapped up in finding "the ultimate hammer" where, to me, it's no big deal. I suspect that I am a lot more interested in a quality nail clipper than the average person who's sufficiently satisfied with the chrome plated items we find in most drugstores and grocery stores. If the average nail clipper you find in the local store is good enough for you, then there's no reason to read this review.
Personally, I find the typical chrome plated, "inexpensive" nail clipper to be utterly maddening. Why? A) the chrome plating often starts falling off before you even open the package and it begins to fall off even faster when you begin using the clippers; B) the cutting edge on most brands is utterly inconsistent. If I buy two pair of a given brand, I find one clips just fine while the second gets about half way through my nail and decides it's just too much work and I end up tearing the nail instead of clipping it. C) The clippers tend to fall apart WAY too fast, with the thumb lever becoming loose and wobbly in no time. D) The metal is such low quality that any significant encounter with water gets them rusting like crazy. E) Even the better ones have such poorly shaped cutting edges that they'd be better described as "nail crunchers", leaving a rough edge instead of a smooth, clean edge. Some cutting edges are so poor they won't even cut cleanly through loose skin around the nail.
If these gripes about the common nail clipper ring a bell with you, then I strongly suggest you try the Seki Edge Stainless Steel Nail Clipper.
First off, it's stainless steel, not chrome plated ... no flakes of chrome getting imbedded under your fingernails ... no rusting after a few days in damp shower kit. Second, the construction is sturdy and substantial, not flimsy. Third, the cutting edge is masterful, delivering a clean, smooth cut every time ... a cut accompanied by a satisfying CLICK!! that tells you it's cut cleanly through the nail. Forth, the mechanism is designed to work smoothly with no ill fitting, loose or wobbly parts. It's simply the best fingernail clipper I've EVER used and I can highly recommend it.
Given that people's priorities do vary, there are a few product details you should consider before purchasing ... if you like a fingernail file built into your clipper, you won't find one here. Personally, when I need a file (which isn't often with this true edged clipper), I use the one in my smallest Swiss Army Knife. Second, there is no round hole in the base of the clipper to which to attach a chain or key ring. There are two narrow slots through which a small diameter chord could be fitted, but nothing big enough to support a chain or key ring. Lastly, this item is made of substantial stainless steel, so it's considerably heavier than most clippers. If that's likely to bother you, keep it in mind.
I have NO regrets about this great clipper and I'm SO glad I got it.
Customer Review: Okay, but I expected better Summary: 3 Stars
I've had the Seki Edge fingernail clipper for several months now and thought I would share my thoughts. First, the background. We've all used the cheap clippers from the drugstore and almost always find them disappointing. But I was lucky enough to find a really good one at least 15 years ago. It looks like all the others and the only markings say "Made in China." But, by some fluke, it works perfectly. So why did I buy the Seki? To have a backup in case something ever happens to my amazing cheap unit. I figured the cost would be worth it if they did as good a job as my old unit.
Here's the short version: They're okay, but I expected better and I still prefer my old cheapies.
Here's the long version: They're okay. Really. They're sharp and feel like quality. They'll probably last a long time. Unlike the cheap units, I'm guessing that Seki has good quality control that results in each unit being just like all the others that roll off the line. So why do I still prefer my old cheap unit? Well, remember that my cheapie happens to be that one in a million that came off the line perfect. The Seki falls short of that standard in the following ways:
1. The Seki makes it difficult to cut your nails very short. I think that's because the face of the clippers is tall, which means it rests against the skin under your nail and prevents you from sliding the clippers farther onto the nail. It's not a big proble!m, but an annoyance when I've torn a nail and need to trim the remainder very short.
2. The handle sticks up at a steep angle from the base. Considering that the unit is constructed from slippery stainless steel, it is difficult to get a grip and squeeze without having the cutting jaws slip out of position. I don't know why they don't just bend the handle about halfway up to make it nearly parallel with the base.
3. They don't do nearly as good a job as my old pair at nipping my hangnails. I have a lot of trouble with hangnails, which are little torn pieces of hard skin along the corner of the nail. To remove them cleanly requires sharp nippers that can be applied to the base of the hangnail. It is essential that the corners of the cutting jaws meet perfectly, which is why most cheapies fail this task. Perhaps it's the tall face of the Seki that renders it a mediocre performer at this task.
4. There is no integrated nail file. To this day, I'm still using the little steel nail file on my old cheap unit, even after I cut my nails with the Seki. Good grief! How long can I expect the old clippers and file to last?
In conclusion, the Seki fingernail clipper is an okay unit. I just wish it was as good as my old $1.98 unit...
Customer Review: the best nail clipper you can buy Summary: 5 Stars
I have always wanted some good nail clippers. In my profession I have to keep my nails clipped short. The clippers you buy at the drugstore or discount stores tear nails more than clip them. I always end up having to file my nails afterward to get a smooth edge. But the Seki Edge stainless steel fingernail clipper changed all that. I bought these, along with the Seki toenail clippers, about a year or two ago. I will never use another clipper again.
These clippers are very sharp. They cleanly clip, and do not tear, your nail. The edge is very smooth. You can sand the edge afterward if you want, but you won't need to do so with these clippers. They are also very ergonomic. I have arthritis in my hands, but these clippers are easy to use. Their only negative is they lack a little tool to clean any debris from under the nail like the cheap clippers usually have, but that is a small annoyance for such a high quality clipper. They are expensive, but if you want quality nail clippers that leave a nice, clean edge these are the ones to buy.
Customer Review: Solid, precision made Summary: 5 Stars
I am a consummate clipper of fingernails. If I don't have a clipper nearby - or worse, if the only clipper is one of those that leave the edges rough and ragged - I end up picking at them, nibbling at them, and leaving a bigger mess. My only solution is clippers that clip cleanly, leaving edges as smooth as a baby's behind. These clippers do that. I sometimes wish they came with a mini-file, but by and large, the clip is smooth enough that no file is necessary. This is well engineered, solid, and well made. If I were to wish any improvement it would be to taper out the ends of the cutting edge just a bit to better reach those pesky little crevasses. Hands down better than the little cheap things hanging in most stores, where the quality you get it just luck of the draw; where the best are half decent and the worst can't even handle a hangnail. If I lost these, I'd buy them again. These are the ones I keep my eyes on when a family member asks to borrow them.
Customer Review: Better than an average nail clipper Summary: 4 Stars
These nail clippers are made in Japan (not China) and are made of high grade steel with sharper edges and better leverage than an average nail clipper. You nails will be cut noticeably more precisely and with less effort. You will hardly need to press on the lever to cut your nails. The result is your nails will look cleaner without jagged edges.
These will cut your toenails as well. I personally prefer these over the regular toenail clippers since these are smaller and can cut with more precision than regular toenail clippers. These also have enough leverage to cut toenails with ease.
If you are looking for a bargain then I would stick to the regular nail clippers that cost only 1/3 as much. I never had issues with regular nail clippers. But then again, these clippers are clearly better and built to last and will serve me well for decades.
