Customer Reviews of The Original InStyler Rotating Hot Iron Hair StraightenerCustomer Review: Could Not Live Without It...And It Could Not Live Without a Few Improvements Summary: 4 Stars
I am currently on my second InStyler. The first, my husband got me for Christmas 2 years ago and I fell in love! I am completely a hair style failure - using any kind of styling tool just ends up making my hair look worse than it did before. But the InStyler made everything super simple.
I've read some people complaining about not being able to use both hands while styling because there's not a cool place to hold on the end. I can see why this is a problem for other irons but you honestly do not need 2 hands for this. If you hold the InStyler closed tight and firm and pull down the length of the hair slow, it works perfectly. I think more of these "complaints" are user error.
But there are some downfalls.
Cons:
- It can be awkward to get used to, especially after learning that you have to hold it so that it rotates with your hair instead of against it. If you hold the rotating barrel on the under side of your hair, you'll end up with little fly-aways. It's nothing a little hairspray at the end can't handle but still a disappointment. Holding the rotating barrel on the top side of your hair gets rid of those fly-aways but it's really awkward to style that. Or at least it is for me. I just hold it how it's comfortable and deal with the fly-aways at the end with hairspray or a quick sweep with a regular straightener.
- The InStyler get EXTREMELY hot. To me, this is a plus. Every salon I have been tells me I have the thickest hair they have ever seen. It's a huge pain and has a mind of it's own. So I always use the highest heat setting and it styles my hair instantly. I can see how this would be a downfall for others with thinner hair as the intense heat does make the styling process a bit more cautionary.
- The bristles. Ah, those damn bristles! The bristles are why I am on my second InStyler. My first is still running like a champ but the bristles on the brush end look like a 30 year old abused broom - they're all frayed and pushed apart. They were barely even brushing my hair as I was straightening anymore so I had to get a second one. Unfortunately, the second one is starting to show a bit of use as well in the bristles but I'm hanging in there. For as expensive as this tool is, I would think they would sell replacement parts, such as the bristles, that you can easily slide in and out when needed. This is definitely something they should consider. I was none too happy when I had to buy another entire unit just because the bristles were pooped out.
- It seems the InStyler was originally designed for professional hair stylists and just got passed to us common folk. When I use it on other people's hair, their hair looks beautiful - just like it does on the models in the commercial. And I think "Now why can't I get MINE to look like that?!" And it's all because that's what it was originally made for, I believe. Not a deal breaker but they should've redesigned it to make it less awkward and more user-friendly for people doing their own hair.
Pros
- When I would use regular straighteners before, it would take me at least an hour to get my whole head done and to be sure there weren't any pieces left unstraightened. It even takes my hair stylist a good 45 minutes to get my hair completely straight. With the InStyler, it takes me 20 minutes, tops.
- As I said, my super thick hair with a wave straight from the Pacific Coast, I didn't have my sights set too high for this thing. The test was when I went to bed with my hair wet the night before and woke up to looking like a wild bush woman. The InStyler had no problem getting it back to a tamed, manageable place. Granted, sometimes, I may have to go over the same piece 2 or 3 times but who doesn't do that anyway?
- Anything that wasn't a con, is a pro. I just love this thing. I do use a regular hair straightener after I'm done with the InStyler but it's not necessary. This thing is a beast and an answer to my hair-prayers!
