Once exposed to a scent, it's in our memory forever---for the good, or bad of it. For Ylang Ylang, incense, the memory is one of my most pleasant.
I was having a mental health, escape weekend, at a Texas Hill Country B&B. It was wonderful! An old, tin-roofed, rock home, with a big screened in porch. Nevermind, that I had to watch out for snakes; it was nirvana.
The owner had supplied the guests with stress mediating materials: candles, AND Ylang Ylang incense. I'm telling you, when I lit that first incense stick, I was transported. At the time, I didn't really understand why.
I've since learned that the fragrance is from a flower native to the Philippines and Indonesia, and widely used in aromatherapy. It is believed to heighten the senses, and lift the mood, while reducing stress---even lowering the blood pressure, for some. It's also thought to have some aphrodisiac properties; the petals of the flower are strewn about the bed's of newlyweds where the flowers' originate. The history of this luscious flower, often crafted into leis to adorn the neck is, in a word---lovely.
Since my first encounter, Ylang Ylang incense has become my favorite floral incense, and this particular product comes the closest to the one forming my 'forever' memory. When I burn it, I'm back in the TX Hill Country, and, for a moment in time, my stress becomes as light as the smoke, drifting away.
